Damp Proofing Products

There is a huge variety of damp proofing products available on the market, each formulated to perform a particular task.  Although the symptoms of damp are similar, the different causes require very different treatments.

Rising Damp Products

Rising damp is commonly treated by creating a chemical damp proof course (DPC). This is done by injecting the chemical DPC into holes drilled into the masonry close to ground level. Traditionally these solvent based chemicals caused significant odour problems and, although effective, were messy and unpleasant to work with. With modern technology most chemical DPCs now consist of organic solvent, or water based formulae that are very effective and have low odour levels. These come in fluid, cream or gel forms, depending on the circumstances. We are certified Triton Chemicals users. Triton are known as the best in the business.

Your damp proof specialist will know the best formula to use to treat your conditions. Triton Chemicals supply an extensive range that is commonly used by damp proofing professionals, as do Microsilan, Dryzone and Kingfisher.
After the completion of a chemical DPC it is essential to repair and replace plasterwork with specially damp-proofed render that will keep out any vestiges of moisture left in the masonry. Again Triton are the industry standard but there are many other brands available.

eelectro osmosis.jpgIn buildings with very thick, or rubble filled walls, it may be impractical to install a chemical DPC. In this situation the best option is to fit an electro osmosis damp proofing system. This works by applying a small electrical charge into the wall by way of a series of titanium anodes drilled into the base of the wall. These anodes are effectively earthed and the resulting charge in the wall repels water molecules, preventing them from rising within the masonry. Installation of electrical osmosis systems is clean and unobtrusive and is permitted in listed buildings. The leading manufacturers and suppliers of electro osmosis damp proof systems are Triton and Lectros.

Penetrating Damp Products

Penetrating damp has a range of remedies depending on the cause of the problem. The most common solution is the fitting of a cementitious tanking basement system. This basically involves completely sealing the affected wall with a coat of waterproof tanking mix sandwiched between coats of waterproof render. As with chemical DPCs, conventional solvent based chemicals are nowadays being replaced by modern, more user friendly materials. Modern cementitious tanking materials are normally based on co-polymer acrylics or active alkoxysilane.

Leading brands include Triton, Vandex, Antel, Corden, SWS and Kingfisher.

cavity drain membrane.JPGAn alternative to fitting a conventional cementitious tanking system is to install a cavity drain membrane. This works by allowing moisture to continue penetrating the exterior wall of the structure, but then controlling it in the wall cavity with a special membrane and diverting it to an appropriate drainage point. Membranes are fitted to the walls using specialised plugs and sealing materials. Leading manufacturers of cavity drain membranes are Delta and John Newton.
